Organising the Memorial for the 30th time is no reason for celebration. When the AIDS Candlelight Memorial was held first in 1983, no-one could have predicted the scale of the global epidemic. With millions of lives lost and around 33 million people currently living with HIV, HIV remains a challenging reality. While for many people HIV has become a chronic disease, many others lack access to treatment and experience HIV-related stigma, discrimination and human rights violations on a daily basis.

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial reminds us of the impact that HIV has on our lives locally and globally. On the website you will also be able to download the poster for the 2013 Memorial, as well as other promotional materials.

Solidarity in communities is essential to reduce stigma and promote the involvement of people living with HIV in order to ensure a more effective HIV response. HIV-hit girl yet to get the promised aid

Yet to recover from the misfortune that has thrown their lives into disarray, the family of the eight-year-old girl who contracted HIV virus through a hospital-acquired infection is still waiting for the financial help promised by the state government.

Soon after the incident came to light, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had said that the government would take up all expenses for the treatment of the child, a native of Arattuthara, near here. Even though one-and-a-half months have passed since then, the promise is yet to be fulfilled.

The girl, a thalassaemia patient, was tested positive for HIV on July 12, 2012, allegedly after transfusion of infected blood either at the District Hospital here or the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital.

"The government has assured us of help but nobody has bothered to know how we are surviving after the incident," the child's father, an autorickshaw driver, told 'Express' on Wednesday. "I feel helpless. I have two more children and parents to support. My wife also is a patient," he said.

"I have tried to contact the Health Minister twice to know about the status of the complaint I had submitted about two months ago. But, I could only talk to his personal assistant who took down our address on both occasions. Even the DMO (District Medical Officer) has not contacted us even once," he said.

DMO A Sameera said that the girl had been registered with the Prathyasa Kendram, the drop-in centre for HIV positive persons, and as she is being treated at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, the authorities there and the Kerala State AIDS Control Society are responsible for providing assistance to the child.

കുഞ്ഞുമോന്‍ യാത്രയായി; എയ്ഡ്‌സിനെതിരെയുള്ള പോരാട്ടം ബാക്കി

കല്പറ്റ: ദീര്‍ഘകാലം എയ്ഡ്‌സ് എന്ന മഹാരോഗത്തോട് പടപൊരുതിയ വെള്ളമുണ്ട മൊതക്കര കുളങ്ങരാത്ത് കുഞ്ഞുമോന്‍ ഇനി ഓര്‍മ. പതിനഞ്ച് വര്‍ഷക്കാലയളവില്‍ തനിക്കുവന്ന മഹാമാരിയെ തോല്പിക്കാനുള്ള പരിശ്രമത്തിലായിരുന്നു കുഞ്ഞുമോന്‍. ഇനി ഒരിക്കലും ആര്‍ക്കും എയ്ഡ്‌സ് എന്ന രോഗം പകരരുത് എന്ന യാഥാര്‍ഥ്യത്തിനുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള കുഞ്ഞുമോന്റെ പരിശ്രമങ്ങളും ഇവിടെ അവസാനിക്കുന്നു.

എയ്ഡ്‌സ് കണ്‍ട്രോള്‍ സൊസൈറ്റിയുടെ വക്താവായി കുഞ്ഞുമോന്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചുവരികയായിരുന്നു. ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലുടനീളം എച്ച്.ഐ.വി.യുടെ ഭീകരതയെക്കുറിച്ച് സന്ദേശപ്രചാരകനായി. മലയാളത്തിലെ മഹാനടന്‍ മോഹന്‍ലാലിനോടൊപ്പം എയ്ഡ്‌സ് രോഗത്തിനെതിരെ പൊരുതുന്ന പരസ്യ ചിത്രീകരണത്തിലും കുഞ്ഞുമോന്‍ പങ്കാളിയായിരുന്നു.

അടിക്കടി രോഗം വ്യത്യസ്തഭാവങ്ങളില്‍ കീഴ്‌പ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോഴും അതിനെയെല്ലാം മനക്കരുത്തുകൊണ്ട് അതിജീവിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു ഇദ്ദേഹം. വെള്ളമുണ്ട എട്ടേന്നാലില്‍ ടാക്‌സിഡ്രൈവറായി ജോലിനോക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് സ്വന്തം വാഹനം ഓടിച്ചും ഉപജീവനം നടത്തുന്ന വേളയിലാണ് മരണമെത്തുന്നത്. 15 വര്‍ഷക്കാലമായി എച്ച്.ഐ.വി. ബാധിതനാണ്. വൈദ്യശാസ്ത്രവിഭാഗം രോഗം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ കാലംമുതല്‍ എയ്ഡ്‌സ് എന്ന മഹാരോഗത്തിനെതിരെ ഈ യുവാവ് നടത്തിയ ചെറുത്തു നില്പ് ചെറുതല്ല. അവസാന കാലയളവില്‍വരെ രോഗം എന്താണെന്ന് മറന്നുകൊണ്ട് തൊഴിലില്‍ വ്യാപൃതനായിരുന്നു. സ്വന്തമായി ടെമ്പോ ട്രാവലര്‍ വാങ്ങി രോഗം നല്‍കിയ ദുരവസ്ഥകളെല്ലാം മറികടന്നു. ഇതിനിടയില്‍ പല രോഗങ്ങളായി വന്നുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

കര്‍ണാടക തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടുള്ള കര്‍ണാടകയാത്രയിലാണ് കുഞ്ഞുമോന്‍ എയ്ഡ്‌സ് രോഗത്തിന് അടിപ്പെടുന്നത്. വഴിവിട്ടുള്ള ജീവിത ബന്ധത്തിന് വിധിച്ച ജീവിതശിക്ഷയായി ഇതിനെ കാണുകയും അസാന്മാര്‍ഗിക ജീവിതശൈലിക്കെതിരെയുള്ള പോരാട്ടം നാഷണല്‍ എയ്ഡ്‌സ് കണ്‍ട്രോളര്‍ സൊസൈറ്റിക്കു കീഴില്‍ തുടരുകയും ചെയ്തു.

രോഗത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് സമൂഹത്തോട് തുറന്നുപറയാന്‍ മോഹന്‍ലാലിനോടൊപ്പമുള്ള പരസ്യ ചിത്രത്തില്‍ കുഞ്ഞുമോന്‍ ജീവിതകഥകള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ആര്‍ക്കുമുന്നിലും രോഗാവസ്ഥയെക്കുറിച്ച് പുറത്തുപറയാന്‍ മടിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.

ബോധവത്കരണത്തിനായി ദൃശ്യ-ശ്രാവ്യമാധ്യമങ്ങളില്‍ പലവട്ടം മിന്നിമറഞ്ഞുപോവുമ്പോഴും നാട്ടുകാരൊന്നും കുഞ്ഞുമോനെ ഒറ്റപ്പെടുത്തിയില്ല. കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ സന്തോഷത്തിലും ദുഃഖത്തിലും ഇടകലര്‍ന്ന് മൊതക്കര എന്ന ഗ്രാമവും വേറിട്ട സന്ദേശം നല്‍കി. എയ്ഡ്‌സ് രോഗികളുടെ ഗ്രാമങ്ങള്‍ ഒറ്റപ്പെടുന്ന വാര്‍ത്തകള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ മൊതക്കര മറ്റൊരു ചിത്രമായി. യാതൊരു സങ്കോചവുമില്ലാതെ സാന്ത്വനത്തിന്റെ സന്ദേശം നല്‍കിയാണ് ഈ ഗ്രാമവും എയ്ഡ്‌സിനെതിരെ സന്ദേശം നല്‍കുന്നത്.

രോഗത്തെ കീഴ്‌പ്പെടുത്തുമ്പോഴും എയ്ഡ്‌സിനെതിരെയുള്ള പ്രതിരോധം ഗ്രാമങ്ങളില്‍നിന്നും ഗ്രാമങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതില്‍ ഇനി കുഞ്ഞുമോനില്ല. ഏറ്റവുംകൂടുതല്‍ കാലം എയ്ഡ്‌സിനോട് പൊരുതി വിടവാങ്ങുന്ന കുഞ്ഞുമോന് അന്ത്യാഞ്ജലി അര്‍പ്പിക്കാന്‍ നാടൊന്നാകെ ഒഴുകിയെത്തി.
