'1,400 HIV patients in Kannur'

KANNUR: There are around 1,400 HIV infected persons in Kannur district, according to the department of health.
Addressing a meeting organized on Thursday ahead of the AIDS Day, DMO in-charge Dr M K Shaj said there are 105 infected people undergoing treatment in the district hospital.
A majority of the patients are in the hilly regions and most of them got the infection when they went to other states for work, said a press release.
According to the voluntary organizations working among the HIV/AIDS patients most of the women got the infection from their husbands.
Based on the findings, the health department will focus more on the hilly areas as far as the AIDS awareness campaigns are concerned, said the DMO-in-charge. As part of the AIDS Day, the health department will organize various awareness programmes in the district on November 30 and December 1.
